Alcohol Addiction

Once a person loses the choice of whether or not they are going to drink, or how much they are going to drink once they start, they have crossed over a line and become alcohol dependent.

Alcohol dependent people, or alcoholics, are people who have lost the ability to decide to drink. They have reached a point where no amount of willpower or personal conviction can help them control the amount of alcohol they ingest. Once a person becomes alcoholic - and is dependent on alcohol - they have entered a disease process that is chronic, progressive and ultimately fatal. Without effective treatment and / or regular participation in a spiritually based 12-step program, the prospects for such individuals is poor.

However, hope is available. With successful intervention and treatment, many alcoholics are able to fully recover and to lead happy and productive lives. Alcohol treatment is most effective when a multi-disciplinary approach is used including medical, psychiatric, psychological, dietary, spiritual and other care provided in a coordinated fashion. By addressing the needs of the whole person holistically, the treatment team can give alcohol dependent individuals a chance to recover.
