During the four-day
program, children develop a variety of problem-solving,
coping and self-care strategies that help them take good
care of themselves and stay safe when they return home.
Parents join the children during the last two days of the
program and also participate in their own parent group.
Family members share their feelings about the disease with
each other through structured activities. They then make
plans to take better care of themselves and each other.
The children and their families are referred to local continuing
care programs at the end of the four-day program. Through
continuing care, family members reinforce their new skills
in self-care, communication and self worth. They build and
deepen their resiliency to face everyday challenges in healthy,
balanced ways.
